  • Using NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scientists discovered an atmosphere around WD 1856 b, a Jupiter-sized planet orbiting a white dwarf; it is the first atmosphere found on a world orbiting a dead star.
  • The atmosphere holds hydrocarbons and clouds of aerosols; the planet was hotter than expected, possibly from tidal heating, showing worlds can survive their star's death.

CERN's LHC heads for a major upgrade

  • The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN shuts down this July for its third 'Long Shutdown', to be upgraded at about $1.5 billion into a 'High-Luminosity' version that makes proton beams collide five times more often.

IIT-Delhi study probes a physics puzzle

  • Researchers at IIT-Delhi studying rutile oxides found that a long-used model, the Klemens model, cannot fully explain how the atomic lattice of metals stiffens on cooling, unlike in insulators.
  • The work used an indigenously built low-temperature Raman scattering facility costing about one-third of comparable commercial systems, and was published in Physical Review B.

New Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026

  • The Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 came into force on April 1, mandating segregation of waste at source and applying the 'polluter pays' principle through a new concept of Environmental Compensation.
  • The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will help States assess waste infrastructure by September 30, 2026. Tamil Nadu's urban local bodies generate about 16,000 tonnes of solid waste a day, of which the Chennai Corporation accounts for around 40%.

Great Nicobar project reviewed

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lieutenant Governor Admiral D.K. Joshi (Retd.) reviewed the sustainable development of the Great Nicobar Islands with a high-level committee of the Union Environment Ministry.
  • It was stressed that mega strategic and infrastructure projects there must include mitigation measures to protect wildlife and the socio-cultural ecosystems of the islands.

Vizhinjam port stake transfer questioned

  • The proposed transfer of a 49% stake in the Vizhinjam International Seaport by the Adani Group to the Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has drawn objections in Kerala over the concession agreement.
  • Adani Ports (APSEZ) assured the State that MSC would not enjoy a monopoly and the port would remain a common-user facility, in line with Kerala's 'Mission Samudra' maritime initiative.

ICC's Return to Play Post-Pregnancy Guidelines

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) released Return to Play Post-Pregnancy Guidelines to help women cricketers returning after childbirth; member boards can frame their own policies from them.
  • ICC Chairman Jay Shah said no player should have to choose between motherhood and representing her country. Cricket returns to the Summer Olympics in 2028.

23 more named terrorists under UAPA

  • The Union Ministry of Home Affairs designated 23 individuals as terrorists under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA); 17 are Pakistani nationals and 6 are Indians, including an engineer from Bengaluru.
  • Those listed are accused of roles from recruitment, training and infiltration to financing, arms supply and drone-based weapons delivery. With these additions, the total number designated under the Act rose to 80.
  • The list includes Abdul Rauf, described as a key Lashkar-e-Taiba operative working under its chief Hafiz Saeed.

Parliament's Monsoon Session from July 20

  • The Monsoon Session of Parliament will begin on July 20 and continue till August 13, 2026, taking up legislative business and discussions.

Indian Navy's P-8I joins RIMPAC 2026

  • The Indian Navy's P-8I maritime patrol aircraft is in Hawaii for the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), the world's largest naval exercise, hosted by the U.S. Pacific Fleet from June 24 to July 31.
  • Thirty countries, 30 surface ships, five submarines, more than 206 aircraft and about 30,000 personnel are taking part; India's role reflects its commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

Govt. asks Telegram to act against piracy

  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting directed the messaging app Telegram to take proactive action to detect and remove pirated content, and to reply to its notice within 15 days.
  • The notice, issued under the IT Rules, 2021, seeks a shift from piecemeal takedowns to platform accountability; the Ministry had earlier had over 3,100 URLs removed in March 2026.

India pitches for balanced trade with China

  • India's Ambassador to China Vikram Doraiswami said greater Chinese investment into India would benefit both economies, and pushed for more Indian exports to China, especially pharmaceuticals.
  • He was speaking at the World Peace Forum in Beijing. China was India's largest trading partner in 2025-26, with bilateral trade at $151.1 billion and a trade deficit of $112.16 billion.

Iran mediation would not benefit India: envoy

  • Rejecting comparisons with Pakistan's recent mediation efforts, Mr. Doraiswami said India stepping into mediation in the Iran crisis would not particularly benefit it, as it is already a crowded field.

Venezuela thanks India for quake relief

  • Venezuela's Foreign Minister Yvan Gil thanked India after visiting the Indian Army field hospital in Caracas, set up to treat survivors of last month's earthquakes that killed more than 1,700 people.
  • Two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft carried 66 tonnes of aid, including the field hospital, relief supplies, medicines and two BHISHM Cubes (mobile health units).

U.S. Supreme Court upholds birthright citizenship

  • The U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump's executive order that sought to deny citizenship to certain children born in the U.S. to non-citizen parents.
  • Birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1868, which grew out of the country's history of slavery and the Civil Rights Act of 1866.

PM opens HPCL Rajasthan Refinery at Balotra

  • It urged a transparent, time-bound revision of the NLEM to safeguard equitable access to essential medicines.

  • Persistent night-time heat made June 2026 the second warmest June in Tamil Nadu this decade, as elevated minimum temperatures reduced the usual overnight cooling.

New Director for Madras Atomic Power Station

  • S.P. Selvakumaran assumed charge as Director of the Madras Atomic Power Station at Kalpakkam, near Chennai.
  • A 1988-batch trainee who joined the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) in 1989, he takes over a station with two units at Kalpakkam.

Ammonia cleared from Tiruvallur seafood unit

  • The Tiruvallur district administration, with a 15-member expert team, removed about 60% of the ammonia from the tanks of a seafood processing unit where a gas leak on June 21 had killed several workers.

  • Tamil Nadu's Directorate of Government Examinations will publish the Class 10 public examination revaluation mark lists, which students can check at www.dge.tn.gov.in.
