What educational qualification is needed for TNPSC Group 1, 2 and 4?

TNPSC's baseline qualification rule is simple - degree for Group 1 and most of Group 2/2A, SSLC for Group 4 - but a genuinely large number of individual posts carry their own specific twist: a particular subject, a typing certificate, a preference order between multiple qualifications, or a relaxation for reserved categories. This answer goes post-by-post using the actual notification tables, not a generic summary, so you can check the exact post you're targeting.

Group 1 - degree, with post-specific preference orders

Note the Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) preference order carefully - it does not mean you need both B.Com and B.L. to be eligible (any degree qualifies you to apply), it only affects who gets preferred when multiple candidates are otherwise equal in the selection process.

Group 2 / 2A - mostly a degree, but read every post's exact wording

Selected examples that differ meaningfully from a plain "any degree":

  • Probation Officer: a degree in Arts or Science, with preference to Sociology/Psychology graduates and to those with social-welfare work experience or a Diploma in Social Service.
  • Deputy Commercial Tax Officer: B.A., B.Sc. or B.Com., with a six-tier preference order between Commerce/Law degree combinations, capped by ex-servicemen preference.
  • Assistant Inspector: any recognised degree, with preference to eleven listed alternative Social Work/Labour qualifications (MSW, PG Diplomas from specific named institutes) - a post built for candidates with a social-work background.
  • Sub Registrar, Grade-II: any recognised degree, with preference to those who additionally hold a B.L. degree.
  • Special Assistant / Special Branch Assistant: a recognised degree plus a Government Technical Examination pass in Typewriting (English and Tamil, Higher Grade for Special Assistant; Lower Grade minimum for Special Branch Assistant, to be upgraded to Higher Grade during probation).
  • Assistant Section Officer (post code 2201): a Master's degree, OR a Bachelor's degree plus a B.G.L. degree, OR a Bachelor's degree with First Class in any one part - except for SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC(OBCM) and BCM candidates, for whom a plain Bachelor's degree is sufficient. This is a genuine, official relaxation built into the qualification itself, not just the age limit.
  • Assistant Section Officer-cum-Programmer: specifically a Master's degree in Computer Applications, or an M.Sc. in Information Technology/Computer Science - a general degree does not qualify for this post.
  • Forester: a Bachelor's degree in Science or Engineering, but only in one of seventeen listed subjects (Agriculture, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, all Engineering branches, Environmental Science, Forestry, Geology, Horticulture, Marine Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Veterinary Science, Wildlife Biology, Zoology) - an unrelated degree such as History or Commerce does not qualify you for this specific post, even though it would for most other Group 2 posts.

Group 4 - SSLC baseline, but typing/computer certificates gate several posts

The recurring pattern across Group 4's typing-related posts: if you already hold a UGC/AICTE/Directorate-of-Technical-Education-approved qualification in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Applications, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a related computing field, the separate "Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation" requirement is waived - worth checking carefully if you have any computing-adjacent qualification, since it can save you an extra certification step.

What counts as a valid degree - the documentation chain

TNPSC accepts SSLC, HSC, Diploma, Degree, PG Degree, Integrated PG Degree, Provisional Degree or Provisional Diploma Certificate, or a Consolidated Mark Sheet together with the Degree/Provisional Degree, as proof of educational qualification. If your final certificate had not been issued by the date of notification, a Provisional Certificate or a proof-of-result-publication letter from your Head of Institution/University (in the format prescribed in the notification's Annexure) is accepted instead. Qualifications must have been obtained by passing them in the standard order - SSLC, then HSC/Diploma, then Under Graduate Degree, then Post Graduate Degree - a qualification obtained out of this normal sequence can be questioned during verification.

What if my qualification is "equivalent" rather than an exact match?

TNPSC notifications generally phrase degree requirements as the named qualification "or its equivalent," and equivalence is decided by the university or the relevant government authority's recognised equivalence rules, not by TNPSC discretion at your convenience. If your degree title differs from the one printed in the notification, obtain a formal equivalence certificate from your university (or check the University Grants Commission's recognised equivalence list) well before certificate verification, rather than assuming it will be accepted informally - "should be equivalent" is not the same as "confirmed equivalent" when your certificates are actually being checked.
