How many questions will be asked in TNPSC Group 1?

TNPSC Group 1 Prelims has exactly 200 questions - 175 General Studies questions (Degree standard) and 25 Aptitude and Mental Ability questions (SSLC standard) - carrying 300 marks in a single 3-hour objective paper. The Main examination that follows is not question-count based in the same way: it is four descriptive papers (a 100-mark Tamil Eligibility Test plus three General Studies papers of 250 marks each), followed by a 100-mark interview.

The exact unit-wise split of the 200 Prelims questions

Read that table like a strategist, not a student: Units V, IV and VI alone carry 130 questions - about 65% of the whole paper. A candidate who masters Economy with Tamil Nadu development, Polity and Tamil Nadu history has already covered two of every three questions before touching Science or Geography.

One official caveat worth knowing: the notification itself states this unit-wise distribution is indicative, and the Commission may marginally increase or decrease a unit's count. Plan around the weightage, but never skip a unit entirely.

Marks, time and the pace you actually need

200 questions in 180 minutes means 54 seconds per question on average. In practice, direct recall questions take 15 to 20 seconds, which banks time for statement-based and matching questions that need a full minute or more. There is no negative marking, so the correct plan is to answer all 200: mark the certain ones fast, flag the doubtful ones, and return with your banked time. The minimum qualifying marks are 90 out of 300 for SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC(OBCM) and BCM candidates and 120 for Others - but qualifying marks only make you eligible; the real cut-off is set by competition, so your target should be comfortably above it.

What comes after the 200 questions: the Mains structure

Note the relationship between the stages: your Prelims score - however high - is discarded after screening. Roughly 20 times the number of vacancies are admitted to Mains, and the final rank is built entirely from the 850 marks of Mains plus Interview. So the 200 Prelims questions decide whether you continue, and the Mains answers decide where you finish.

How this compares with the other TNPSC exams

Every major TNPSC exam uses a 200-question objective paper, but the internal split differs sharply: Group 2/2A Prelims gives only 75 questions to General Studies and 100 to a Language part; Group 4 gives 100 of its 200 questions to a scoring Tamil test. Turn the question counts into a weekly time budget. If Unit V is 50 questions and Unit I is 10, your revision hours should reflect something close to that 5:1 ratio - not equal chapters per week. That compression is why two habits matter more than any book: revising the top three units repeatedly (they alone are 130 questions), and rehearsing the full 200-question format until your accuracy in hour three matches your accuracy in hour one. Candidates lose more marks to fatigue and format errors in the last 50 questions than to any genuinely unknown topic.
