Group 1 (Combined Civil Services Examination - I) runs across three stages - Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview - and each stage has its own detailed structure. This answer covers the exact pattern from Notification 05/2026, plus the unit-wise syllabus breakdown behind the Prelims paper, so you know precisely how many questions come from each subject.

Units V, IV and VI together account for 130 of the 175 General Studies questions - 75% of the paper - which is exactly why a strong candidate front-loads Indian Economy/TN Development Administration, Indian Polity and TN History/Culture/Heritage before touching the lighter units (Science and Geography carry only 10 questions each). The Aptitude and Mental Ability section (25 questions, SSLC standard) splits into Aptitude (15 questions: simplification, percentage, HCF/LCM, ratio and proportion, simple and compound interest, area, volume, time and work) and Reasoning (10 questions: logical reasoning, puzzles, dice, visual reasoning, alpha-numeric reasoning, number series).

Papers II-IV are evaluated only if you clear the Paper I qualifying mark, and appearance in all Main papers plus the Interview is compulsory - miss even one and you are dropped from the selection regardless of your marks in the others. Your final rank is decided entirely by Papers II, III and IV plus the Interview (850 marks) - the Prelims score and the Tamil Eligibility Test score play no role in the final merit calculation, they are pure qualifying gates.
The three General Studies Main papers expand well beyond the Prelims units into dedicated territory: Paper II covers Modern History and Indian Culture in depth; Paper III adds a full Ethics and Integrity unit and a Tamil Society - Culture and Heritage unit not tested the same way at Prelims; Paper IV covers Indian Economy's current trends and the impact of the global economy on India, alongside Geography. This means Prelims-level revision is necessary but not sufficient for Main - candidates who only revise their Prelims notes for Mains typically underperform on the descriptive-depth questions Mains actually asks.
Because Prelims and Mains are scored completely independently (Prelims marks never carry into your final rank), the smartest sequencing is: clear Prelims comfortably first with unit-weighted revision (spend roughly your revision time in proportion to each unit's question count - Units V, IV, VI get the bulk of it), then shift fully into Mains-depth material once you know you have qualified. Many aspirants make the mistake of trying to prepare Mains-level depth from day one "just in case," which spreads their limited time too thin before Prelims and risks missing the qualifying cut-off altogether - qualify first, then go deep.
A second common mistake: treating the Tamil Eligibility Test (Paper I of Mains) as unimportant because it doesn't add to your final score. It is still a hard gate - score below 40 and your General Studies papers are never evaluated, no matter how well you wrote them. Budget real preparation time for it rather than assuming your everyday Tamil is automatically sufficient for the exam's specific descriptive format.

Once Papers II, III and IV are evaluated, candidates are shortlisted for Interview at a fixed multiple of the vacancies in each reservation group - two times the vacancies where five or more posts are reserved for a group, three times where the group has four or fewer vacancies. The Interview itself carries 100 marks with no minimum qualifying mark, and its stated purpose is to judge the candidate's overall suitability for the service, not to re-test subject knowledge already covered in the written papers. Candidates provisionally admitted for Interview are also required to undergo a medical examination, which is conducted only after the Interview is completed; the post's final eligibility is decided only once the Medical Board's report is available. There is no supplemental list for Interview - if you are not called in the numbers described above, there is no second window that cycle.
One detail that trips up otherwise well-prepared candidates: appearance in the Interview on the notified date and time is compulsory, and requests to change the date or time are not entertained. Missing your slot, for any reason, removes you from selection for that recruitment regardless of your written marks.
One more number worth planning around: the Commission admits roughly 20 times the number of vacancies to the Main Examination (with reservation-group ties admitted beyond that ratio too), so Prelims is a real screening filter, not a formality - treat qualifying comfortably above the cut-off, not just at it, as your actual Prelims target.
