Group 2 and Group 2A share one Common Preliminary Examination, then split into separate Main Examinations with genuinely different formats - Group 2's Main is a classic paper-based descriptive-plus-objective combination, while Group 2A's Main includes a Computer Based Test. Qualifying mark is 90 for every community alike - Group 2/2A is one of the few TNPSC stages where the qualifying mark does not differ by reservation category. Notice how much smaller the General Studies share is here (75 questions) compared to Group 1's 175 - Group 2/2A's Prelims leans more heavily on the Language paper (100 questions), which rewards strong Tamil or English comprehension as much as subject knowledge.

There is no interview for these posts - Paper II's General Studies marks alone decide the final merit list, once Paper I's qualifying bar is cleared. This makes Group 2's Main a single, high-stakes 300-mark objective paper covering the full Degree-standard General Studies syllabus (Constitution/Polity/Governance with Tamil Nadu-specific weightage, Geography and Environment of Tamil Nadu, and the broader units shared with Group 1's syllabus family).

The CBT is TNPSC's computer-screen version of an objective exam - five options per question are displayed on screen, and you select your answer with a mouse click rather than shading an OMR bubble. Importantly, the notification is explicit that no computer knowledge or typing skill is required: basic mouse operation is all that's needed, and TNPSC provides a mock test session before the real exam specifically so first-time CBT candidates can get comfortable with the interface. If you have only ever taken paper-based OMR exams before, do not let the CBT format itself worry you - the subject preparation is identical to any other objective paper, only the answering mechanism changes.
A subtlety worth flagging: Group 2's Main Paper II General Studies is a single unified 300-mark paper, while Group 2A's Paper II General Studies is only 100 of the 140 CBT questions, sitting alongside a separate 40-question Reasoning component. If you are preparing for both services, don't assume identical time allocation across subjects - Group 2A specifically rewards strong reasoning ability in a way Group 2's Main does not test directly.
Because the Language section is 100 of the 200 Prelims questions - half the paper - candidates who only prepare General Studies and Aptitude are leaving half their score on the table. General Tamil at this level tests grammar, vocabulary, literary passages and comprehension at a standard beyond conversational fluency; General English similarly tests grammar and comprehension rather than basic spoken English. Treat the Language paper as a full subject to prepare, not something your everyday fluency will automatically cover, especially if your schooling was in a different medium than the paper you intend to attempt.
A related point that catches out many aspirants moving from Group 4 preparation to Group 2/2A: Group 4's Tamil paper (Part A) is a separate scoring test from the Language paper here - Group 2/2A's "Language" option lets you choose Tamil or English, while the Tamil Eligibility Test at the Main stage is a different, additional, qualifying-only paper everyone must clear regardless of which Language option they picked at Prelims.

This is the single biggest structural difference aspirants overlook: Group 2 Main Paper II is a descriptive, pen-and-paper General Studies paper, while Group 2A Main Paper II is an objective Computer Based Test with three distinct sections. Neither Group 2 nor Group 2A has an Interview stage at all - your rank is decided purely by Main Examination marks, which makes writing practice (for Group 2) or CBT speed and accuracy (for Group 2A) the deciding preparation skill, not interview readiness.
Following the same pattern used across TNPSC's exams, onscreen certificate verification for Group 2/2A is conducted before candidates are admitted to the Main Examination - not at the end of the process. There is no supplemental list published for candidates who are rejected at this stage or who fail to upload the required documents in time, which means a document error here can cost you the Main Examination attempt entirely, independent of your Prelims marks. Keep every certificate (community, educational, date of birth proof) ready and correctly matching your OTR details well before this stage arrives, rather than scrambling once the verification window opens.
