The Group 1 Preliminary Examination 2026 is on 27 September 2026, 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM. This date changed once already after the notification was first published, so it's worth understanding exactly what happened and how to stay current on any future revision.

Notification 05/2026 originally set the Preliminary Examination for 6 September 2026. Addendum No. 5A/2026 (dated 16.07.2026) officially postponed it to 27 September 2026, keeping the same 9.30 AM - 12.30 PM time slot, while explicitly stating that every other condition in the original notification remains unchanged.
TNPSC issues addenda (numbered supplements to the original notification, such as "5A", "8B", "8C") whenever something in the original notification needs correcting or rescheduling - a vacancy count revision, an eligibility clarification, or, as happened here, a date postponement. These addenda are legally binding updates to the notification and always take precedence over the original text for whatever they cover. The safest habit: before finalising your study schedule around any exam date, check TNPSC's official site (tnpsc.gov.in) or your registered mobile/email for addendum notices, rather than relying on a single date you saw once, since - exactly as happened with this Group 1 cycle - the first published date is not always the final one.
Based on TNPSC's established pattern across recent cycles, Preliminary Examination results are usually announced some weeks after the exam, followed by a Main Examination preparation window before that stage is conducted, and the Main Examination date itself is announced only after Preliminary results are declared - it is never fixed in the original notification. If you clear Prelims, expect a real but not unlimited runway to prepare for Main; use the gap deliberately rather than assuming it will be long.

The Preliminary Examination fee is Rs.100, payable at the time of the online application unless fee exemption is claimed by an eligible category; a further Main Examination fee of Rs.200 applies for candidates shortlisted to that stage, again unless exemption applies. While applying, candidates choose two examination centres in order of preference, though the Commission reserves the right to allot a different, nearby centre if your chosen ones cannot accommodate you - benchmark-disability candidates may choose only one centre and are allotted a venue within that district. Once your Hall Ticket is issued, requests to change your allotted examination centre are not entertained.
Clearing the Preliminary Examination is only the first gate. Based on the notification's own Plan of Examination, the Commission admits roughly 20 times the number of vacancies (26 vacancies here, so in the range of several hundred candidates, adjusted for reservation-group ties) to the Main Examination - Prelims marks themselves are then discarded and play no role in your final rank. Before admission to Main, candidates go through onscreen certificate verification; no supplemental list is published for anyone rejected at that stage or who fails to upload documents in time, so this step deserves the same seriousness as the exam itself. Only after certificate verification do qualified candidates sit the Main Examination (Papers I-IV), followed by Interview for those who clear Paper I's Tamil Eligibility Test qualifying mark and the Paper II-IV qualifying threshold.
Given that this cycle's Preliminary Examination date has already moved once (from 6 September to 27 September 2026, via Addendum 5A), treat every date on this page as current as of the addendum cited above, not as permanently fixed. TNPSC communicates all further changes - Main Examination date, certificate-upload schedule, interview call letters - only through the Commission's own website and through SMS/email to your registered mobile number and email address; it explicitly does not send communications by post, and it is not responsible if a message fails to reach you due to an incorrect or inactive contact detail in your OTR profile. Keep your registered mobile number and email active and correct throughout this entire recruitment cycle, and make checking tnpsc.gov.in a standing habit rather than a one-time check after applying.
If you're preparing for 27 September, treat the next weeks as your final Prelims-focused sprint - shift fully into Mains-depth material only after this exam, not before. If you've already applied and are simply waiting, use the remaining time for the highest-yield activity available to you: full-length timed mock tests under Prelims-identical conditions (200 questions, 3 hours, OMR-style, bilingual), since raw content revision without timed practice is the single most common reason otherwise well-prepared candidates underperform on exam day.
Against 26 tentative vacancies and a Preliminary Examination pattern that typically draws candidates in the tens of thousands statewide, the honest takeaway is that competition for this specific Group 1 cycle is intense by nature - not a reason to be discouraged, but a reason to prioritise focused, timed practice over broad, unfocused reading in your remaining preparation time.
