Group 4 (VAO, Junior Assistant, Typist, Steno-Typist, Field Assistant and similar posts) is the only TNPSC group with a genuinely single-stage selection - no separate Mains, no interview, one 200-question paper decides everything. This answer covers the exact pattern from Notification 07/2025, the gating rule that catches out a large share of candidates every year, and the posts this pattern actually covers.

200 questions total, 300 marks, 3 hours, objective (OMR). Part A is set in Tamil only; Parts B and C are bilingual (Tamil and English). Note that every part is SSLC standard - unlike Group 1 and Group 2/2A, there is no Degree-standard component anywhere in the Group 4 paper, which is exactly why the baseline qualification is SSLC rather than a degree.
Part B and C answer sheets are evaluated only if you score at least 40% (60 out of 150 marks) in Part A, the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test. Score below that threshold, and your General Studies and Aptitude answers are never evaluated at all, however well you answered them - you simply score zero on Parts B and C regardless of your actual performance there. This single rule is responsible for a meaningful share of "good preparation, poor result" outcomes every year: candidates who spend all their preparation time on General Studies and Aptitude, treating the Tamil paper as an afterthought since it's "just SSLC standard," sometimes discover on results day that their Part A score fell just short of 60 - and the marks they earned in Parts B and C never counted at all.
Because all three parts' marks (up to 300 total) are added together for your final rank once Part A is cleared, there is no way to compensate for a low Part A score with a high Part B/C score - the qualifying bar must be crossed first, then everything adds up.
Group 4 recruits for a wide spread of clerical, revenue and support posts across Tamil Nadu government departments and public sector undertakings, all sitting the same 200-question paper: Village Administrative Officer (VAO), Junior Assistant (in many departments including Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation, Forest Plantation Corporation), Junior Revenue Inspector, Junior Executive (Office) at the Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation, Junior Assistant cum Typist, Typist, Steno-Typist Grade III, Personal Clerk, Assistant, and Field Assistant, among others. A handful of these posts (Typist, Steno-Typist, some Junior Assistant roles) carry additional typing/shorthand/computer-certificate qualification requirements on top of the written exam - see our FAQ on educational qualification for the exact certificate needed per post.
Forest Guard, Forest Guard with Driving Licence, Forest Watcher and Forest Watcher (Tribal Youth) sit the same written paper as every other Group 4 post, but additionally require a Physical Standards Test and, for some categories, an Endurance Test (a supervised walk covering set distances), conducted separately by the Forest Department after the written exam. If you are targeting a Forest post specifically, factor physical fitness preparation into your plan alongside the written paper.
Part A (Tamil) tests grammar (புணர்ச்சி, பிழை திருத்தம்), literary passages and comprehension at SSLC standard - not conversational Tamil, but the kind of formal grammar and literature questions asked in a school Tamil final exam. Part B (General Studies) covers the same six-unit family used across TNPSC (Science, Geography, History and National Movement, Polity, Economy and TN Development, TN History/Culture/Heritage), simply pitched at SSLC depth rather than Degree depth. Part C (Aptitude) covers basic arithmetic and reasoning at a level most candidates who completed SSLC mathematics can handle with practice, without needing degree-level quantitative methods.
Because the standard is SSLC throughout, Group 4 preparation genuinely can be built almost entirely from Samacheer Kalvi school textbooks (6th to 12th standard) rather than external competitive-exam reference books - see our dedicated book list FAQ for what to add on top of the school syllabus.

Unlike Group 1 (three stages) and Group 2/2A (two stages), Group 4 selection is decided entirely by one written examination split into three parts within the same paper:

Total: 200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours, objective, OMR-based. Parts B and C are evaluated only if you clear 40% (60 marks) in Part A, and your final rank is the sum of all three parts taken together - there is no separate qualifying-only paper here the way Group 1's Interview or Group 2's Tamil Eligibility Test work; Part A's marks count fully toward your rank once you clear the 40% gate.
Differently abled candidates (regardless of disability percentage) who studied English only in Board/University may opt for a General English (SSLC standard) paper instead of the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test, provided the disability certificate is uploaded with the application - missing that upload means the exemption claim is rejected outright.
After the written exam, Group 4 selection moves directly to certificate verification and (for posts that require it, such as Forest Guard/Watcher) a physical standards and endurance test - there is no Interview stage anywhere in the Group 4 process.
Group 4's syllabus for the written examination is published as a separate annexure to each notification, and while its content overlaps heavily with the same six-unit General Studies structure used in Group 1 and Group 2/2A, the standard is set at SSLC level rather than Degree level for General Studies here - meaning the depth expected is genuinely lighter, even though the topic list looks similar on paper.

மொத்தம் 200 வினாக்கள், 300 மதிப்பெண்கள், 3 மணி நேரம், objective வகை (OMR). Part A தேர்ச்சி பெற்றபின் மூன்று பகுதிகளின் மதிப்பெண்களும் (மொத்தம் 300 வரை) இணைந்தே உங்கள் இறுதி தரவரிசைக்கு கூட்டப்படுவதால், குறைந்த Part A மதிப்பெண்ணை அதிக Part B/C மதிப்பெண்ணால் ஈடுசெய்ய வழியில்லை - தேர்ச்சி வரம்பை முதலில் கடக்க வேண்டும், பின்னரே எல்லாம் கூட்டப்படும்.
குரூப் 4 தமிழ்நாடு அரசுத் துறைகள் மற்றும் பொதுத்துறை நிறுவனங்களில் பரந்த அளவிலான எழுத்தர், வருவாய், ஆதரவு பணியிடங்களுக்கு ஆட்சேர்ப்பு செய்யும், அனைத்தும் ஒரே 200-வினா தாளை எழுதும்: கிராம நிர்வாக அலுவலர் (VAO), Junior Assistant (Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation, Forest Plantation Corporation உள்ளிட்ட பல துறைகளில்), Junior Revenue Inspector, Co-operative Milk Producers' Federation-இல் Junior Executive (Office), Junior Assistant cum Typist, Typist, Steno-Typist Grade III, Personal Clerk, Assistant, Field Assistant உள்ளிட்டவை. இவற்றில் சிலவற்றிற்கு (Typist, Steno-Typist, சில Junior Assistant பணிகள்) எழுத்துத் தேர்வுக்கு மேலதிகமாக தட்டச்சு/சுருக்கெழுத்து/கணினி சான்றிதழ் தகுதிகள் தேவை - ஒவ்வொரு பணியிடத்திற்கும் துல்லியமான சான்றிதழுக்கு எங்கள் கல்வித் தகுதி FAQ-ஐப் பார்க்கவும்.

Part A (தமிழ்) இலக்கணத்தை (புணர்ச்சி, பிழை திருத்தம்), இலக்கியப் பகுதிகளையும் புரிதலையும் SSLC தரத்தில் சோதிக்கும் - உரையாடல் தமிழ் அல்ல, ஒரு பள்ளி தமிழ் இறுதித் தேர்வில் கேட்கப்படும் வகையான முறையான இலக்கணம் மற்றும் இலக்கிய வினாக்கள். Part B (General Studies) TNPSC முழுவதும் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் அதே ஆறு-அலகு குடும்பத்தை உள்ளடக்கும் (அறிவியல், புவியியல், வரலாறு மற்றும் தேசிய இயக்கம், அரசியலமைப்பு, பொருளாதாரம் மற்றும் TN வளர்ச்சி, TN வரலாறு/பண்பாடு/பாரம்பரியம்), வெறும் பட்டப் படிப்பு ஆழத்தை விட SSLC ஆழத்தில் அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும். Part C (Aptitude) SSLC கணிதத்தை முடித்த பெரும்பாலான வேட்பாளர்கள் பயிற்சியுடன் கையாளக்கூடிய அளவில் அடிப்படை எண்கணிதம் மற்றும் reasoning-ஐ உள்ளடக்கும், பட்டப் படிப்பு-தர அளவு முறைகள் தேவையின்றி.
முழுவதும் SSLC தரமாக இருப்பதால், குரூப் 4 தயாரிப்பை வெளிப்புற போட்டித் தேர்வு reference புத்தகங்களை விட, சமச்சீர் கல்வி பள்ளிப் பாடப்புத்தகங்களிலிருந்தே (6-ஆம் வகுப்பு முதல் 12-ஆம் வகுப்பு வரை) கிட்டத்தட்ட முழுவதுமாக உருவாக்க முடியும் - பள்ளிப் பாடத்திட்டத்திற்கு மேலதிகமாக என்ன சேர்க்க வேண்டும் என்பதற்கு எங்கள் புத்தகப் பட்டியல் FAQ-ஐப் பார்க்கவும்.

பள்ளி/கல்லூரியில் ஆங்கிலம் மட்டுமே பயின்ற மாற்றுத்திறனாளி வேட்பாளர்கள் (இயலாமையின் சதவீதம் எதுவாக இருந்தாலும்) தமிழ் தகுதி-கம்-மதிப்பெண் தேர்வுக்குப் பதிலாக பொது ஆங்கிலம் (SSLC நிலை) தாளைத் தேர்வு செய்யலாம் - ஆனால் விண்ணப்பத்துடன் இயலாமைச் சான்றிதழ் பதிவேற்றப்பட்டால் மட்டுமே இந்த விலக்கு ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படும், பதிவேற்றத் தவறினால் கோரிக்கை நிராகரிக்கப்படும்.
எழுத்துத் தேர்வுக்குப் பிறகு, குரூப் 4 தேர்வு நேரடியாக சான்றிதழ் சரிபார்ப்புக்கும் (வன பாதுகாவலர்/கண்காணிப்பாளர் போன்ற சில பணிகளுக்கு) உடல் தகுதி மற்றும் சகிப்புத்தன்மைச் சோதனைக்கும் செல்கிறது - குரூப் 4 நடைமுறையில் பேட்டி நிலை எங்குமே இல்லை.
குரூப் 4-இன் எழுத்துத் தேர்வுக்கான பாடத்திட்டம் ஒவ்வொரு அறிவிப்பிலும் தனி பிற்சேர்க்கையாக வெளியிடப்படுகிறது - அதன் உள்ளடக்கம் குரூப் 1, குரூப் 2/2A-இல் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் அதே ஆறு யூனிட் பொது அறிவு அமைப்பையே பெரிதும் ஒத்திருந்தாலும், இங்கு பொது அறிவின் தரம் பட்டப்படிப்பு நிலைக்குப் பதிலாக SSLC நிலையில் நிர்ணயிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது - அதாவது தலைப்புப் பட்டியல் காகிதத்தில் ஒரே மாதிரி தோன்றினாலும், எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும் ஆழம் உண்மையிலேயே இலகுவானது.
